Golf in Charleston A LONG-STANDING TRADITION With over 20 challenging courses, Charleston has long been par for the course. Dig deeper into this tempting recreational terrain, and you’ll discover even more depth of Charleston’s golf story. Since the 1700s, the game has been a part of the local landscape, with a downtown course no less. There is proof in this putting: Records show that in 1743, a considerable 432 golf balls and 96 clubs were on a shipment from the Scottish port of Leith to Charleston. Fast forward to 1786, and the South Carolina Golf Club is established in what is now downtown Charleston. It was played on Harleston Green, located between Calhoun and Beaufain streets. In modern times, Charleston’s claim to golfing prominence came in 1991, when the Ryder Cup was played on The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Since then, the Charleston area continues to recruit prestigious, international tournaments. Some of the crowning achievements include the 2007 Senior PGA Championship and the 2012 and 2021 PGA Championships, which will return to the island in 2031. The USGA has stage their premier women’s championships at the Country Club of Charleston, including the 2013 US Women’s Amateur and 2019 US Women’s Open.
